The links below lead to the web-site and blogspot of a fellow Orthodox parishioner and friend, Debbie Apple, who works Windy Acres Farm and Farmshop with her family in Orlinda, Tennessee, just 20 minutes outside of Bowling Green, KY.
I want to highlight these sites for a couple of reasons. First, to draw attention to this family farm that is operated very efficiently by the Apples as a family business that is an inspiring example of good stewardship of land and resources, as well as ultimately a ministry to the faithful in their Orthodox church community in Bowling Green and the wider Bowling Green community. And secondly, as an example of a life-style that in some small way we ultimately hope to emulate, living in connection to the land, working with our hands, and being productive with our resources in a way that will allow us to provide for our essential needs and ideally the needs of the community as well. Of course this can occur in a variety of ways, and may mean that we simply support this business and buy food locally from this farm or others like it, possibly taking it a step further to learn to grow some food of our own and utilize some of the cooking and food-preserving techniques given on this blog as well as in the great selection of books that are listed on their site (http://astore.amazon.com/windyacresfarm-20)
One thing the Windy Acres blog emphasizes repeatedly is "living by the seasons". My desire is to explore this as we continue to make our home together, and when the time comes that we do have our own stretch of land somewhere in this world, that we can utilize it well in a manner that is conscious of the seasons for the food we eat, the energy we use in our home, as well as how we fast and feast according to the Church year.
I hope you also enjoy peeking into Windy Acres!
